Robert the AuthorRobert A. Friedman remembers being so bored in the first grade that he whipped out a piece of pre-lined pulp paper and wrote a short poem. Then another. And another. By the second or third grade his lack of attention in the classroom led to short stories. A career had been launched! Later, he wrote “prophecies” for his fellow sixth graders at graduation (the accuracy of which has not been confirmed or denied). At 14 Robert provided the entertainment for the Southern California Federation of Temple Youth’s yearly get-together by writing, directing and producing his first musical, presented in a large amphitheater in a public park. (With original book and lyrics and music “borrowed” from Broadway). In high school he wrote, directed and performed in the school’s pep rallies. At this time Jewish mothers did not allow their sons to play football (it’s still a tough decision). He later was graduated with a degree in journalism from San Diego State, and honed his craft on a handful of smaller newspapers before working as a feature writer/reporter on a major Los Angeles daily. One particular assignment suddenly changed his life (see Robert the Pastor). He’s written a number of plays (including several for actor Mickey Rooney), screenplays (hasn’t everyone in L.A.?) and several novels. Robert has also co-written a brand new musical destined to lift up a down trodden world. His books, along with his stage plays and screenplays, range from outlandish satire to historical drama, from futuristic conflagrations to parodies of contemporary life. Robert lives with his wife Anita in Southern California and has three adult children, four grandchildren, a cat and two granddogs. |
